It all started with a bulb and a hobby, and it has grown into an obsession.
Back in October 2006, I went to GarlicFest at the Cox Arboretum in Centerville, Ohio, and bought some garlic. It is an easy crop to grow. I call it the Ronco Root, plant it and forget it! Garlic grows best when the cloves are planted in the fall, then the scapes and seed pods are cut when they start to come up around May, and in July you harvest all the garlic heads.
For a number of years now, we would peel and mince the garlic and then freeze them. We started using ice cube trays that were circular and had silicon bottoms so that they were easy to pop out. Then stored them in the freezer for use. That turned out to be more work than necessary. After a year or two of that, we started putting the minced garlic in sandwich bags and freeze them. After the minced garlic is frozen for a day, they are then put in a gallon freezer bag and stored in the freezer. I've also 3-D printed a little square separator which makes the garlic into small squares that can be easily used in meals.
This last year, we hadn't been using much of the frozen minced garlic. (Or I may have over did the amount we had.) I decided I wanted to try and make garlic powder instead. The result is Sarcastic Root Garlic Powder.
Enjoy the garlic powder!
Here is the process that I take to grow, harvest and package the garlic.
